The European cyclo-cross championships 2021 on the Col du VAM, with its winding route including steep climbs and challenging cobblestone lane, shows Drenthe as a cycling province in all its beauty.
The “roof of Drenthe” is a fantastic course and has already proven its added value during the Dutch national cycling championships in 2020 and 2021. An iconic location to celebrate cycling!
The European cyclo-cross championships have been organized annually since 2003. The races take place at the start of the cyclo-cross season, in November. Initially, races were only held for elite women, promises men and juniors men. In 2013 the category women under 23 was added and since 2015 the competition for elite men has also taken place. Lars van der Haar was the first to win the elite men’s title.
Mathieu van der Poel is the record holder with three titles. Daphny van den Brand won the women’s title four times and Marianne Vos also won her first European Championship title in 2005. Currently, the Dutch Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado is the reigning European champion.
The Col du VAM was the setting for a unique championship in 2020. Namely the first major sports event in the Netherlands after the outbreak of the corona pandemic. During the Dutch Lottery Dutch Cycling Championship, the iconic hill in the Drenthe landscape was the scene for spectacular races with Anna van der Breggen and Mathieu van der Poel as champions. In 2021 there was gold for Timo Roosen and Amy Pieters.
Due to the expected participation of many world top players and the hunger for top sports and events, it promises to be a thrilling event.
